Our enormous thanks to the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal for awarding the district a small equipment grant that paid for a turnout gear dryer and a carcinogen barrier protective hood for each firefighter. The dryer just arrived and was assembled today, and the members have all been issued their new hoods.
Carcinogen exposure is a real and present threat to the well-being of all firefighters, and having clean turnout gear and PPE is critical to reducing that exposure. While the district has had a washer/extractor for well over a decade to clean the gear, drying time can keep a member out of service for over a day. This will expedite that time a great deal, ensuring our firefighters can be back in service in their personal gear sooner.
We've also historically issued two firefighting hoods to members to allow them to be washed and rotated thus reducing exposure risks, but the carcinogen barrier hood will now offer a higher level of protection, especially to areas around the scalp and head that are hot-spots for absorption of carcinogens into the body.
That’s an awesome addition to help keep everyone as safe as possible.
